Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has given a speech at St George’s Bristol entitled ‘Culture for All’, in which he urged the sector to ensure that everyone in the UK has the opportunity to engage with our artists and actors, our history and heritage.

Javid’s observation is that there are still too many people excluded from cultural life, and this is backed up by statistics that show a stark socio-economic split between those who buy lottery tickets and those who consume the culture it subsidises. He was quick to point out this did not mean striving for popularity and aiming for the lowest common denominator’, rather ‘giving everyone a chance to develop their own cultural tastes’. The former Financial Secretary to the Treasury, reminded delegates to ‘Never forget that every penny of taxpayer support and lottery cash that goes to culture has been provided by hard-working people from every community in the UK.’ You can read the full transcript here @Gov.uk.
