Bridge House to become part of Trowbridge’s growing cultural offer

Bridge House in Trowbridge is to be given a new lease of life as a centre for drawing and contemporary art, having recently been purchased by Professor Anita Taylor, an artist, curator and educator. Bridge House will provide a studio for her own art practice and a base for Drawing Projects UK which was established in 2009 to promote and develop exhibitions, educational activities and community engagement in and through drawing.

Her partner, Gary Sangster, who has international experience as an art educator, curator, writer and museum director, will lead on contemporary art and curatorial research and development and will manage the ground floor space which will house creative and educational organisations, artists, designers, makers, an education space and ancillary services.

The ambition for Bridge House is to be complementary to the work that is going on at Trowbridge Town Hall in its development as a centre for Arts, Culture and Heritage and to work closely with the Town Hall Trust and Trowbridge Arts to help grow Trowbridge’s growing cultural offer.

Professor Anita Taylor explains ‘Having recently relocated to the area to become Dean of Bath School of Art and Design at Bath Spa University, we were looking for a new studio and a creative work environment. Bridge House provides a special and exciting opportunity and will also enable expansion of the activities of Drawing Projects UK. In 2014, I was invited by Trowbridge Arts to speak about the Derwent Art Prize at Trowbridge Town Hall, and was impressed by the vision and ambition to develop a cultural centre at the heart of the County Town. We look forward to fostering collaboration and community engagement in the contemporary visual arts in the County Town and wider region, as well as nationally and internationally through our work in the visual arts.’

Tracy Sullivan, Director of Trowbridge Arts and a director of Trowbridge Town Hall Trust ‘We are really thrilled that Professor Anita Taylor has chosen Trowbridge as her base. Anita has been really supportive of what we are trying to achieve, to inspire our community by offering opportunities to take part in and see really high quality visual art and performance. Anita is a really highly regarded artist and it is brilliant for Trowbridge and the Town Hall project to have someone of her calibre increasing the profile of the County Town as a cultural hub’.
