Dancing Back to 1914 – Call out for Expressions of interest for a Dance Animator.
The Heritage Focus:
Dancing Back to 1914 was launched in April of this year and was created to inspire young people living in Wiltshire, their families and communities to engage in sharing and learning about the social history of 1910-20, focusing on World War 1.
The project explores the social heritage of 1910-20 with a focus on World War 1, bringing elements of its history back to life for young people through access to buildings used in 1910-20, historic places, museum displays, people who understand the history and can inspire young people through stories; music, dances and artefacts such as letters between men in the trenches, their friends and families.
The project raises awareness of the impact of the Great War, the technological developments and social change that accompanied it.
During its first term the project set up classes in Tidworth and Salisbury. It has explored and interpreted the music and dance that was popular from 1910-20. This evolved into investigating social issues of the time through engagement with the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, museums, heritage sites and other groups engaging in the heritage of the Great War. Reading letters from the ‘front line’, listening to poetry and stories has increased young people’s awareness of this heritage and enable them to consider its impact on lives today.
The process has encouraged young people to reflect on their developing values and beliefs. POP-up dances, performances and celebrations of learning and achievement have been shared with peers, families and the wider community.
We are seeking expressions of interest for a dance animator with a good history of inspirational work that is rooted in participatory arts principles. A background in working with young people aged 13-19 as well as engaging with diverse partners across a local authority would be desirable. Work will be delivered across Malmesbury on a Thursday evening from September to December 2015, working with an already identified group of young people. The animator may be required to work evenings and weekends where project events occur.
We welcome the following:
- quality and integrity of process and production
- imagination and innovation in engagement practice
- significant experience of participatory practice, especially with young people
- Up to date DBS clearance and public liability insurance
The Fee: £25 per hour
