Opportunity: Write West – a new writing prize in the south west, Papatango Theatre Company

Papatango have recently launched a programme of new writing in the South-West running until spring 2020, and it’s all completely free to participants and more details can be found on this link https://papatango.co.uk/writewest/

Working with partners including Literature Works South West, Salisbury Playhouse, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Arts Council South-West, and supported by Bristol Old Vic and The Tobacco Factory, the programme includes:
1) Provide a £6.5K commission for an early-stage playwright living in the SW, developing a new play. The commission will be open application, for all SW residents, and include extensive dramaturgy and mentoring. We hope to launch a new writing career and generate a new play which can ultimately be produced at one or more SW venues.
2) Run free playwriting courses for 36 grassroots playwrights at 2 venues in Plymouth and Taunton, culminating in a staged reading of one of the plays at each venue, completely free for a local audience. The aim is to foster networks of writers and open venues up as hubs for writers and audiences.
3) Deliver free workshops at 9 state schools in Gloucestershire, Hampshire and Bristol that teach students to write their own plays, culminating in performances by professional actors and publication of the plays. The aim is that students without easy access to drama resources/education experience what being a playwright is like.
4) Deliver 12 free workshops (with access measures like BSL interpreter) for adults without professional experience, led by specialist practitioners, in Exeter, south Gloucestershire and Somerset.
5) Run a 6 month producing course across Salisbury, Southampton and Plymouth, to help to create new companies/infrastructure for new writing, culminating in awarding 3 producers £3K each towards their first productions within the region.
6) These are all free – and we provide £4.5K in travel grants for participants to minimise the challenges of navigating such a huge region or accessing different opportunities. So wherever people are based, they could still attend and engage wherever projects are being run.
These will all be funded in their entirety by www.papatango.co.uk
